Original MIDIcreator
This is the original MIDIcreator, which has a range of built-in settings. It has 14 sockets on the front panel, into which you can plug various different switches and sensors for detecting movements.
To get this to work you’ll need:
- A power supply for the MIDIcreator.
- A sound module.
- A MIDI cable – to link the ‘MIDI Out’ on the back of the MIDIcreator to the ‘MIDI In’ on the sound module.
- A pair of speakers or headphones to plug into the sound module.
- Some switches and/or sensors to plug into the sockets on the front.

MIDIcreator
This updated version was launched in 1999 and comes with coloured front panels in red, green and blue. The different colours don’t mean anything – it was the age of the iMac when colours were all the rage.
There were two models – MIDIcreator and the MIDIcreator + (Plus). The + looked identical but had a built-in sound module, removing the need for an additional cable and box. Speakers or headphones can be plugged directly into the ‘Audio Out’ socket on the rear of a MIDIcreator +.
This MIDIcreator doesn’t have a control panel for switching between settings. Instead settings are altered through the use of credit card sized ‘Config Cards’. These cards slide into the slot on the left hand side of the front panel, with the gold contact side down. Cards change the MIDI settings related to each socket on the Creator and hence the sounds and notes produced.
To operate the MIDIcreator + you’ll need:
- A power supply.
- Speakers.
- Switches and sensors for detecting movements.
- Smart Cards.
